Reef gold was first discovered at Nundle in 1852; alluvial gold may have been discovered as early as 1849.
Most of the old mines are situated either near the hamlet of Bowling Alley Point, or between Nundle village and Hanging Rock village.

The Mount Misery Gold Mine Museum features a 150 meter underground mine tunnel and is packed with mining and gold rush memorabilia.
